About Us

The Carolina Shag Club, based in Greenville, South Carolina, is a vibrant, welcoming community dedicated to preserving and promoting the Carolina Shag — the official state dance of South Carolina. We are an official member of ACSC, the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs, a large organization consisting of about 100 clubs and 14,000 members. We currently meet at SpareTime Entertainment at 822 Congaree Rd, Greenville at 6PM for beginner lessons and 6:45PM for intermediate. Our Social dance starts after at 7:15PM and goes until 10PM.

 

The Shag is a smooth, graceful six-count partner dance set to the soulful rhythms of classic beach music, blending 1950s-1970s R&B, soul, and rock 'n' roll. In addition, the CSC works hard to support local charities through donations and lessons.

Being a member of the Carolina Shag Club offers a warm, inclusive experience in one of Greenville’s friendliest dance communities, where singles and couples of all ages and skill levels are genuinely welcome, and the atmosphere buzzes with camaraderie, fun, and low-pressure socializing. Weekly Wednesday gatherings feature beginner and intermediate lessons starting at 6pm and 6:45pm — no partner required, as the club happily pairs newcomers — followed by open dancing to live DJs spinning timeless beach tunes, creating an easy entry point for anyone curious about the dance's basics (which are approachable) while offering endless room to grow with more advanced steps. Members enjoy benefits like access to events, opportunities to connect with fellow enthusiasts, and a sense of belonging to a supportive group that emphasizes staying active, meeting new friends, and keeping the joyful spirit of shag alive through raffles, themed parties, and outreach like free junior programs.
